A trip to the Texas Hill Country inspired owners Randy and Tracey Harmon to bring a classic experience to downtown Tomball.
Craving Kernels Gourmet Popcorn and Treats opened in December 2018. Like the quaint shops and cafes the Harmons visited in the Hill Country, Craving Kernels aims to capture that familiar nostalgia, Randy said. Its shelves are stocked with items to satisfy every customer’s sweet—or savory—tooth, he said.
“We were looking to bring just a fun, casual and laid-back environment to Tomball,” Randy said. “We wanted to create something where kids and adults walk in and can’t help but smile.”
Shelves lining Craving Kernels’ bright yellow walls are filled with jars of gumballs, candied fruit, candied nuts and more. The cost is determined by the weight of a customer’s bag, which can be filled with anything from the shop.
The shop also sells 14 flavors of homemade fudge and more than 80 flavors of popcorn as well as candied apples. When it comes to picking out popcorn to take home, customer options range from a $2.75 mini serving to the $45.95 extra-large bag. The store also sells themed buckets perfect for gift baskets, Randy said.

Prior to opening Craving Kernels, Randy worked in the printing industry, and Tracey worked as a dental hygienist, Randy said. He said he was burnt out on corporate life, and they were both looking for a change. They also both happen to love popcorn, he said.
“I think people feel at ease [at our store],” he said. “And I think another thing that draws people is we encourage people to sample things. I have some come into the store and try 30 or 40 different flavors of popcorn. Some of them don’t buy anything after that, or some buy quite a bit. But I don’t get caught up in that. I just want people to have a good time.”
